The New Hampshire House today passed a bill that would limit the carry of weapons on campus to law enforcement, the military and people explicitly authorized by the local school board.
The legislation, if passed by the Senate (also in control of Democrats), the bill would go to Republican Gov. Chris Sununu's desk. It does not appear that Sununu has taken a public position on the legislation yet, but he did sign legislation two years ago making New Hampshire a "constitutional carry" state.
Rep. David Meuse, D-Portsmouth, said nothing can make schools completely safe, but said passing the bill would “send the message that we’re willing to do something to protect our kids other than sending them our thoughts and prayers.”
"Gun Free Zone" signs, which to date have prevented exactly zero school shootings, apparently carry some mystical properties for many Democrats.
“Would it place some sort of protective zone of invulnerability around our kids if we pass it? The answer is no, it won’t,” he said. “What this bill will do is offer one small, rational, realistic and helpful thing we can do together to minimize the risk of the unthinkable happening in our state.”
It is unclear exactly how disarming law-abiding citizens, including teachers, who happen to be on campus will be successful in stopping the next, determined, nut job.
